Mild, mild winter
We have been having a very mild winter this year. I am so happy but am hesitant to get too excited as there are a couple months left of winter and who know - we could have a huge dump of snow.......
The eastern part of the country has not been so lucky.....
No laughing at them though - or karma will get you

Busy, Busy, Busy
My husband is an outdoor kinda of guy. He prefers to be outside and is sporty and loves all things engine related.
Somehow this season I have been sucked into the being outside with him and the kids. We bought seasons passes to the local ski hill for everyone in the family. Because they were not cheap we have to go on at least one of the weekend days. We have put the boys in ski lessons so every yesterday the ski for 2 hours and we have 2 hours to snowboard with out them. It is nice. But sometimes I sort of wish that I could sit in my PJs and watch a movie........ Somehow the weekends are getting busier and busier.
This weekend looked like this
Saturday - at the skill hill from 9 - 3:30. Then home and dinner and I took the dog to the dog park for a play and a run. Then bed
Sunday - Husband hockey 7am, son hockey 8:45am, church 10am, ski hill (son lesson and me lesson) until 4:30 then home for dinner and then I curl from 7-9pm. I am not sure if I am going to be able to walk Monday morning after all that exercise.
Noooooooooooooooo I am tired........ Where is the resting????
I hope there is some time for vegging out next weekend.

Don't question your boss
When she sends you an email and uses the word "Gospeller" don't fire off a cocky response asking if that is a word.

New Curling broom
My husband's grandma (who we call Nanny) gave me $100 for Christmas to spend just on myself. A rare treat for sure. I normally do what we always do when we get money for holiday's and birthdays, which is to put it in the travel account at the bank.
This year I thought I would actually spend it on something I need. And I need a curling broom. Last year I rented one before every game but sometimes they were crappy. This year I am using my friend Kerri's. She had a baby and can't curl (Ha Ha) so I asked if I could use hers. She has a really nice one with a synthetic top and a light weight handle. So I thought it was time for me to get one too.
I bought an " Ultima Excalibur Carbon Fibre" curling broom. It is bright orange and looks pretty spiffy. Synthetic top and light weight it it is purdy for sure! AND as a bonus it was one sale. The Curling Club got a good deal on them and passed the savings onto us. It retails for 149.99 and I bought it for 99.00 - score!
Still remains to be seen if it makes me a better curler but here's hoping.
Second one from the right - That one is mine

Pot luck with the over 65 crowd
Last week at work I was invited by the ladies who run the Thrift Store at the church to join them at their yearly potluck. I wasn't given a lot of notice so I couldn't contribute something BUT I did join them for lunch.
There are a couple of menu items that mark a pot luck as a church potluck. One is deviled eggs and egg salad sandwiches. Have to have those at a church pot luck. The other is very very strong tea (we've talked about that before).
But what marks a church potluck as one that the average age of the participants is 70 is jellied salad. Oh yes, jellied salad. This one had green jello with carrots in it. hmmmmmmm.
Now don't get me wrong . I LOVE JELLO and I also like carrots a lot. But together? ummmmmmm no.

Just wrong (below)

A funny work mistake
I am back to work part time at a church in our community. I am the Office administrator and part of my responsibilities are to create the weekly church bulletin.
I am rather famous for my terrible spelling and I often get things proof read before they go out to the wide world. This turned out to be lucky for me this week.
I typed "God's scared tradition"
supposed to be "God's sacred tradition"
Big, big difference.........
Almost as funny as the time I put in the Christmas leaflet "Angles we have heard on high" instead of "Angels we have heard on high"
Sigh

Kids say the funniest things
The large field beside my son's preschool is often full of Canada Geese.
This week he asked me if he could chase them.
Not wanting to give him a complex about birds (the larger they are the meaner they are e.g. swans), I told him that is wasn't nice to chase birds and it probably wasn't a good idea.
He thought about it for a long time and then said "oh right, because you'll get goose bumps"
cracks me up.

Runners
I bought myself new runners this week. I had been saving for them so felt less guilty about their price tag. I bought my last pair for mothers day last year and ran over 300km in them (I know this would take marathon runners 2 months to do that but I think it is pretty impressive.)
My old runners - great!
My new runners are Brooks as well and are a slightly different style. First run down and I like them. No blisters and nice support.
Which helps with operation run faster - up to 4.8 this week. Makes me feel like I am going to die still so I will stick to this speed for a while.
Registration has opened for a fun local run. I did a 5k last year and am torn. Do I run another 5k and try to do the best I can or do I push myself and do a 10k? I ran a 10k last summer on the hottest day of the year. It was not a good run and I would like to see if I could do it again and not suffer as much.
Thoughts?

An update on baby Shea
Just a quick update on Baby Shea - they now have a website which is www.loveforshea.com and have had to bump up their fundraising goal to $50,000 through the go fund me site www.gofundme.com/Babyshea and are currently just over $32,000! Good job people!
They have had a set back though - Shea has been diagnosis has been refined to Herlitz -Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa. This news has devastated Christy and Bryn and completely changes the level of care that Shea requires. We will be lucky to have Shea in our lives for the next 3 years. In order to manage his daily care and insure he is as loved and comfortable as possible Bryn or Christy will now need to stay home with Shea full time.
This is hard to hear but I know that they are so grateful for the support they have received already.

Creepy new photo trend
There is a new trend in photography that keeps popping up all over social media. This trend is "newborn photos".
Mom's and Dad's bring their fresh baby into the photographers studio and "cuteness" ensues.
The problem I have with it is that the babies often look dead or fake like dolls, an effect that is actually more creepy than cute. They key to a NON creepy picture is to take it when the baby is awake, thus looking "alive"
My good friend Charissa just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and has a session planned. I expressed my concerns and she promises she'll keep an eye out for creepy and/or dead baby shots. Phew! She's a keeper as a friend!
I think the problem with this type of photo started for me when I met a photographer who volunteered her time and considerable skills to Now I lay me Down to sleep Photography program www.nowilaymedowntosleep.org/ Their mission is to introduce remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with a free gift of professional portraiture. It is just a small way to help ease a parents suffering and I have always thought it was a wonderful thing for her to volunteer her time for. Unfortunately now that is all I can think of when I see new born glam shots is the work she does with parents who have lost their babies.
I will show you some examples of live babies:
Not creepy - note the open eyes - it does help

Creepy and hilarious (sorry but it is both funny and creepy, clearly I am easily swayed if you use a mustache)

whoot!
I curl once a week and I enjoy it.
I am a lead - this means I go first.
Here is the break down (from curling for dummies)
I am a pretty strong sweeper but mostly because I have to sweep 6 rocks an end so you get a lot of practice.
Anyway - point is tonight one of my rocks counted for points AND we WON the game by 1 point - WHOOT WHOOT

Here is the break down (from curling for dummies)
The Members of a Curling Team
In curling, the team you play on is called a rink. The rink is made up of four players: the lead, the second, the third (also called the vice, vice-skip, or mate), and the skip. Each player has specific duties:- Lead: The lead throws the first two rocks of the end and then sweeps the next six. The lead must be very good at throwing guards and a strong sweeper.
- Second: The second throws the third and fourth stones of the end and should be strong at playing takeouts. The second sweeps the first two stones and then the final four of the end. The second and the lead need to be in sync when sweeping together.
- Third: The third (or mate or vice), who throws the fifth and sixth rocks of the end, must be good at all shots, but especially draws. It is the third’s job to set up the shots that will be thrown by the skip, and to help the skip discuss the strategy of the final two stones of the end. The third also posts the score at the conclusion of the end.
- Skip: The skip is the captain of the team and decides the strategy. It’s the skip’s job to tell the other players where to throw their shots and when to sweep. The skip also delivers the last two shots of the end. The skip must be good at all types of shots.
Anyway - point is tonight one of my rocks counted for points AND we WON the game by 1 point - WHOOT WHOOT

Church tea
We went to church this past Sunday and stayed for coffee/tea afterwards.
It never fails that church ladies make the tea too strong.
2 bags of Orange Pekoe in a little pot steeped for 15 min = too strong.
Ick, people, ick
This is too dark - that is what coffee should look like

Running
I
recently bought my friend Natalie's treadmill so that I may continue to
run even when it is icy and freezing out. I am a fair weather runner and
the idea of slipping on ice, or trying to breath outside much past - 3
just does not appeal to me. So if I want to maintain the leg muscles and
stamina, I have to move indoors.
My mom and I were talking about treadmill speeds (She and my dad go to the gym 3 days a week) and she said she does a fast walk at 4.0 mph. welllllllllll ok. I at that point had been running at 4.2 mph so I decided I had better start increasing speed so that I won't be out run by my own mother. Operation speed increase commenced and I am up to 4.6 mph.
Treadmill running requires a certain level of self discipline - it is boring and you can really stop whenever you want to so it is more a mental game to keep going.
This is what a normal run looks like broken down by time:
0 - 17 min - hurts and is stiff and awkward - this is the place that you need to keep talking your self into staying with it. Not going to lie I have said to myself "Keep going fatty, keep going"
18 - 29 min - feels better but still not great. Your legs are warmed up and you may start to think "Hey this isn't so bad"
30 - 39 min - I feel GREAT at this point. I think "wow I like this" and then sometimes I think "I could probably go a bit faster". If for some crazy reason I increase the speed it usually puts me back to the start in terms of enjoyment and pain level.
39 min - 42 min - getting tired and sweat in my eyes. This is the point where I start walking and cooling down. I will start operation run for longer once I have conquered operation run faster.
After a run - I feel pretty good, not stressed at all and sleep well.

So sad
I found out sad news this week :(
I learned that a co worker in the place I used to live had given birth to a beautiful baby boy who has a rare genetic skin condition and would require serious care for the rest of his life.
I later found out that not only did he have the worst case of this that you could have but that we was also only expected to live 3 years.
My heart breaks for them. Makes everything else seem trivial.
I have donated to help them cover some of the medical expenses but if you are interested here is the link
http://www.gofundme.com/Babyshea
or if you are a church going person you can pray for them. It all helps.

I don't want to curl without Jimmy
I curl once a week in a fun curling league on Sunday nights. I am the "lead" which means I go first and am the worst player on the team. I am ok with this, it is true and I am getting better every game. I also sweep the most which is actually pretty fun and I am a great sweeper.
This week our third was sick. His name is Jimmy and he is 76 years old and a great curler. I have a tiny little crush on him which is no longer a secret in the club. In fact the tease us both about it all the time. But what can I say - he's funny, a little bit deaf, and very kind and I think he is kinda cute. Well I guess he had a pretty good Christmas because he has gout and he can't curl until his foot hurts less. Gout is not cute - ick!
So on top of the fact that Jimmy is missing this week we also had to play Team P. Team P is made up of 2 married couples. The Skip - Mr P is the best curler I have ever seen and his wife is almost as good. The only thing that keeps them from beating everyone soundly is that their first and second players are fairly new. No word of a lie I have seen them beat other teams by 12 points. That is a lot in curling.
Tonight, short handed they only beat us by 4. Not too shabby.
I need a curling start over and for Jimmy to be back. Here's hoping for next week.

New Years Resolutions
The boys were listening to the radio on New Years eve and listened to a discussion about New Years Resolutions. Neither had ever heard of them before and got a kick out of the concept. After much giggles and discussion here is what they came up with.
Oldest (we will name him J for privacy)
1. Drink more pop this year
2. Play more video games this year
3. Let H beat him up more
Youngest (we will name him H for privacy)
1. Drink more pop and play video games allllllll year
The are not really allowed to do either of the above so they thought it was HILARIOUS that this was their resolutions.
Then J said that mine should be to snack less.
Ohhhhhhhhhh burn! Not nice J, not nice............
Maybe mine will be to not allow them to do either of the above. Take that!

Mom - why is the bathroom so fancy?
my oldest asked me the other day why the bathroom was so fancy.
I replied "by fancy do you mean clean?" (I had just spent half an hour in there cleaning it)
He said "Yes, it is so clean, are we having company?"
Nope - no company - just decided to do a deep clean - right down to the baseboards. They sparkle now..................
I wonder if 8 is too young to get him to start scrubbing the bathroom with me?
